Summer, swimming and surviving it all with your period!
Summer is finally here! And, if you’re like me you won’t want to miss out on a chance to take a dip, cool off, and enjoy the dreamy summer days with friends at the beach, or by the pool.

One thing I know about summer and periods is that at some point your period and your swimming plans are going to clash! But, don’t let a period day ruin a sweet summer day. Here are some tips from Team Wonder Girl on how to stay comfortable in the water.

Use a tampon
Unfortunately, using a pad while swimming is not a great idea — a pad will soak up water like a sponge, and most likely the sticky backing won’t stay sticky and the pad will move around. Definitely not what you want! Using a tampon is your best bet. If you haven’t used one before, it just takes a bit of practice. Oh, and make sure to tuck the little string in your swimmers so it doesn’t show!

Location, location, location…
If you can, choose a beach/location that has a toilet, and set up not too far away. This will make it easier to get to the bathroom as often as you need to. To help prevent excessive bacteria growth, doctors recommend changing your tampon every four to eight hours (or less if you have a heavy flow). There is a chance that healthy bacteria could become dangerous if a tampon is left in too long, and this could cause bacterial vaginosis or toxic shock syndrome. Remember to choose the smallest tampon that you can get away with, bring extra tampons, and change regularly…even at the beach.

Choose the right swimwear…
Leaks and stains are always a possibility, so wear your favorite dark-colored swimsuit, just in case. You might even like to wear board shorts to feel more comfortable and secure.

Don’t let cramps spoil the day…
Let’s be honest, cramps are never fun. They are even less fun when it’s hot and you’re just trying to chill out with your friends. If you usually take pain medication when you have your period, don’t forget to pack it. And, pack a nice big towel — lying on your tummy on the warm sand is like a lovely heat pack and can help to relieve your cramps.

Stay safe in the sun…
With all the extra planning needed to make your day at the beach a great one, don’t forget one of the most important things — stay safe in the sun. Pack sunscreen, a hat and maybe even a beach umbrella, and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

The summer season is short, so enjoy it, and don’t let your period stop you from going swimming, or doing anything you love, for that matter.

XOXO

P.S. Of course, there’ll be days you’ll want to just laze on your sofa, with a tub of your favorite ice cream, flicking through Netflix instead, and that OK too!!
